Adverb คือ คำวิเศษณ์ (หรือ กิริยาวิเศษณ์ )
ทำหน้าที่ขยายกิริยา ไม่ว่าคำกิริยาวิเศษณ์จะเรียงวางไว้ตรงไหนในประโยค มีหน้าที่ขยายกิริยาแล้วยังขยายคำคุณศัพท์ หรือไม่ก็ขยายกิริยาวิเศษณ์ด้วยตนเอง
ตัวอย่าง ใช้ขยายคำกริยา
She draws pictures hard. หล่อนวาดรูปอย่างขยันขันแข็ง

Types of Adverb (ชนิดของคำกิริยาวิเศษณ์)
1.Adverb of time มีหน้าที่ขยายกิริยาเกี่ยวกับเวลาบอกให้รู้ถึง เหตุการณ์ ต่างๆ ที่เกิดขึ้น อาจวางไว้ตรงไหนก็ได้
- Yesterday = เมื่อวานนี้
- soon = ในไม่ช้าเร็วๆนี้
- Before = ก่อนหน้า
- late = ช้า มาไม่ทัน
- After = หลัง ภายหลัง
- last week = สัปดาห์ที่แล้ว

2. Adverb of place มีหน้าที่ขยายคำกิริยาเกี่ยวกับสถานที่
- There = ที่นั้น
-Here = ที่นี้
- Outside = ภายนอก
- Inside = ภายใน
- Beside = ด้านข้างๆ

3.Adverb of Frequency คำกิริยาวิเศษณ์บอกความสม่ำเสมอ
- Always โดยสม่ำเสมอ
- hardly แทบจะไม่
- Twice สองครั้ง
- thrice สามครั้ง
- Frequency บ่อยๆถี่ๆ
- again ทำอีกครั้ง
- Regularly เสมอๆเป็นประจำ

4. Adverb of manner กิริยาวิเศษณ์บอกกิริยาอาการ
- Slowly อย่างช้าๆ

- Certainly อย่างแน่นอน
- Well อย่างดี

5.Adverb of quantity กิริยาบอกปริมาณ(ว่ามากหรือน้อย)
- Much มาก

6.Affirmation or Negation กิริยาวิเศษณ์ยอมรับหรือกิริยาวิเศษณ์บอกปฏิเสธ
- Yes ใช่ ได้เลย
- no, not ไม่ใช่ ไม่ได้ อย่า ไม่ทำ
